Common boxing techniques for beginners

Posted on 09 March 2019 (0)

Boxing is perfect for when you want to build endurance; both muscular and cardiovascular, strength and stamina. However, it goes beyond just throwing punches. As a beginner to boxing, you have to learn some basic techniques first before proceeding to the advanced level. Knowing the right techniques to use is very important as it can prevent you from sustaining injuries during sparring. As a beginner, although you can always train at home, it is advisable to register for boxing classes in a gym. You can click here to register for our beginners’ boxing class. The techniques to know are as follows:

  • Fight Stance

The fight stance should always be the starting point for a beginner. Once it has been mastered, you would always be able to use it to protect yourself and your punches would also pack power. In the fight stance, your hands are supposed to protect your face, the shoulders protect the chin while your elbows and forearms would protect your body.

If you happen to be right-handed, you should stand with your right foot behind the left with both feet at a shoulder-width length. Your left foot should point forward and the right one should point outside to the side at about 45 degrees. You should tighten your abs and keep a slight bend in your knees. You should practice both forward and backward moving while in the fight stance.

  • Left Jab

A jab is a type of punch usually used in boxing. It is an integral part of a fighter’s defense and can also be used to initiate punch combinations. The process involves taking a step forward with the left foot and at the same time extending the left arm. It is an overhand punch and as such, at the moment of impact, the fist is held in a horizontal position with the palm facing the ground. You should always remember that you are punching through the opponent and not trying to push him away. People that are left-handed would use the right jab.

  • Bob and Weave

As boxing is mostly about offense and defense, the bob and weave technique is perfect. It involves moving the head both beneath and laterally of an incoming punch. As the opponent’s punch is coming in your direction, you bend your knees and squat to avoid the punch. It’s an up-and-down movement. Mistakes like bending at the waist, bending too low and moving in the same direction as the opponent’s punch can easily be made with this technique so you have to be careful.

  • 1-2 Punch

This is a basic punch combination which involves the left jab followed by a cross. With this combination, the objective is to get in range and land a power punch. When it is done correctly, the jab (1) stuns and/or distracts your opponent, and the straight right (2) could quite easily be your knockout punch because it is powered by your hips, shoulder, and arm.

These techniques would go a long way in improving the game of a beginner and as time goes on, more advanced ones can be learned.

Importance of having a clean carpet

So you, just like many other people have installed carpets in your home or office because of how comfortable and aesthetically pleasing it looks in your space. Although using a carpet is a totally excellent choice when considering the type of flooring to use, it is important that the carpet has to be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. Sweeping and vacuuming the carpet regularly counts as cleaning but sometimes, professional help from local carpet cleaners may be needed. Apart from reducing dust in your living space, there are many other things you stand to benefit from having a clean carpet. Some of them are:

  • It improves the standard of living: As carpets usually gather a whole lot more of dust particles, germs, and allergens than the other types of floorings, they have the potential of triggering breathing problems such as allergies and asthma. The bacteria found in the carpet can also cause many health problems especially in little children that sometimes pick things to eat from the carpet. While regular vacuuming helps to remove these bacteria and dust particles to be on the safe side, when there has been a build-up over time, engaging the services of professionals would be much better. This way, you can rest assured that the dust and bacteria would be eliminated and the chances of catching a cold or having an asthmatic attack would be reduced.
  • Improved appearance and life-span: When a carpet is stained or dirty, it loses its appeal and aesthetic quality and also, it tends to look old and worn out. The best way to keep your carpet always looking new and neat is to be regularly employing the services of professional carpet cleaners in addition to vacuuming on a regular basis. A clean carpet wears less and lasts longer. Cleaning a carpet regularly increases its life span.
  • It improves productivity in workspaces: In a home or public space e.g. offices, the last thing a visitor or client wants to see is a dirty or stained carpet. This is a huge turn-off, especially in workspaces. A dirty environment can also reduce the productivity of the people in that space. A dirty office can be both distracting and harmful to workers health wise. A dirty, spotted carpet collecting bacteria may affect your health. Employing the services of professional carpet cleaners from time to time would go a long way in ensuring that your workspace is clean and that your workers are happy and healthy. • Improved air quality: When a carpet is clogged with dust particles and debris, the air in that space would be compromised and the space would become stuffy and unpleasant. This can affect the health of the occupants of that space. Regular cleaning by professionals would help maintain good air quality in your space.

Regular carpet cleaning is very important as it makes your space more healthy and conducive. Vacuuming every day and professional cleaning every two weeks would keep your space habitable and your carpet clean and dust free.

Five Ways to Stay on Track with your Fitness Goals

Posted on 12 November 2018 (0)

Anyone who has ever committed themselves to a fitness regime will tell you it’s one of the things that are easier said than done. With daily responsibilities at work, home chores, and unforeseen circumstances, it always seems as though there’s never enough time to include an exercise routine in your daily program. One thing you must realize is that without your full commitment and efforts, it’s not possible to achieve your personal fitness goals. A half-hearted effort and commitment won’t get anything done.

You’re reading this because you want to see tangible results from your fitness program, don’t you? It doesn’t have to feel like an illusion game anymore. Here are ways you can stay on track with your fitness goals:

Set Realistic Standards for Yourself

Having Unrealistic standards for yourself will not only result in demotivation but cause you to lose sight of your fitness goals. You can’t expect maximum results with minimum effort. Whatever effort you put in your fitness routine is directly proportional to the results you see. Everything starts with setting realistic fitness goals. Your goals must be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-based.

Don’t Treat Exercise as an Isolated Task but integrate it into your Daily Life

It’s important that you keep your muscles engaged by integrating working out and exercise into your everyday life. Treating exercise as an isolated task is likely to make your fitness program feel boring. View it as an integral part of your daily life. Sticking to the same activities can also result in boredom which is why you need to introduce variety and make sure you’re mixing together different workouts.

Keep a Fitness Journal

When you establish a plan, it becomes easier to stick to your fitness program and routine than without one. While journaling might not even come to mind whenever fitness and exercising are mentioned, it’s for sure that recording your progress will help you develop your routine and see it as an essential part of your lifestyle. You’ll be able to keep each day productive, change your approach to exercise, and reflect on how far you’ve come.

Keep yourself Accountable by Getting Social

Whether you enlist the help of a friend or pay a personal trainer, it’s a lot harder to skip your sessions or back out your fitness program when you’re accountable to someone else. Remember you have goals to achieve and you don’t want to let yourself down. The point is to involve others so you can stay motivated and accountable.

Reward Yourself

The moment you make the decision to lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain a fitness routine, you’re in it for a long haul. This isn’t just any other short-term commitment you’re trying to make. Ever realized every store in your neighborhood has a rewards program? Why? They aim at having returning customers. You also want to create a rewards program for yourself. Whenever you meet a specific fitness goal you’d set be sure to reward yourself. It’s recommended not to choose food-related rewards. Go for rewards such as a new outfit, a massage, a movie etc.
